Jay Hirani, Family & Friends: Fundraising for YKPA

 Perth April 2024 Cycle Challenge.

I did not like cycling, cyclists and everything on two wheels. However, when the cycling group picked an orphanage ( Ykpa Kids  ) that was close to my heart. I signed up and bought a bike and all the gear... That was the easy part.

Over the next six months, I changed my diet, gave up alcohol and trained every morning in the gym, strengthening and building my core and legs. Then, I spent weekends getting used to the bike and building my stamina. The first training ride of 16km to eventually 150km, avoiding the swooping magpies in the Spring to starting the ride at 2 am to avoid the sun in the 40c Summer.

Six weeks from Day 1, my leave is cancelled..... Did I give up? Those who know me know I am a determined, stubborn old git.

I had to work for the first two days of 3 day Challenge, however I matched the Team Km for Km.

Day 1 - 150km

1 am start, ride out to Muchea ( Outback town )on my own and back twice to get the 150km before work. As on the video it's pretty dark and isolated out there, and had to watch out for loose Kangaroos and rabbits enroute. Once finished I rode straight into work. Day 1 done.

Day 2. - 100km

Rode into work at 7 am to get the 12 km needed. Got picked up from work and dropped off at the starting point and rode 90km to meet the Team at Mandurah. It was daylight this time, but 35C and I had to manage with limited water intake throughout the journey. The last 35 km was dark and isolated, and I had to deal with the Kangaroos, cobwebs and flying bugs.

One hundred metres from the Team Hotel, I got my first and only puncture. I prepared to pump up the tyre and realised all this time the pump had the wrong nozzle. So it would never have worked..... Walked the rest.

Day 3 - 90km

6 am start with the Team and support vehicles. It was pretty hard as the legs suffered; however, the team helped each other to the finish line in Perth.

Done.

My journey was challenging and, thinking about it, pretty dangerous. In context, this is short-term suffering compared to the lifetime of challenges the orphans face.

Thanks to all the organisers, volunteers and riders from across the globe who helped to raise funds and make a difference to the children.
